The First Women's Royal Rumble

This article was prewritten in December but I kept pushing it to this week. Every column this week including the list will be a Royal Rumble article. Tomorrow the article will rank each of the Royal Rumble matches. Expect personal bias.

This is a significant match. We had the first Royal Rumble match for men 31 years ago. It's amazing with all the great women signed on in the past they would have had one before. But women's wrestling in WWE is actually better now than it ever has been. Charlotte, Natalya, Asuka, Bayley, Sasha Banks, etc. You have a ton of great divas in developmental like Ember Moon, Peyton Royce, Nikki Cross, etc. And now they are getting more legitimized with singings of some of the best women around the world including Candice LeRae, Kairi Sane, etc. Not to mention legitimate fighters like Shanya Baszler and a potential Ronda Rousey signing.(Two of MMA's 4 Horsewomen. A 3rd Horsewoman is married to NXT star Roderick Strong.) And it isn't just in the WWE that women's wrestling is better. You have Masami Odate over in Japan. The newest Bullet Club member Tessa Blanchard. Veteran women's wrestler in the northeast Mercedes Martinez. Women's wrestling talent is spread all across the world.

The significance of this is huge. They will likely be the opening match because you want as much space for the women's and men's Rumbles to breathe as possible.(Over the last 3 week's I've watched the previous 30 Men's Royal Rumbles and let me tell you it is taxing.) That shouldn't limit the significance of what's going on. The first match of the night sets the pace for the card. They could use this to tell an interesting story.

One change from this Royal Rumble and previous battle royal's the WWE has had is that the women have to go over the bottom or middle rope. Most of the women in WWE are shorter than the top rope. Now they have to go over the top rope. So it's going to be interesting at how they work themselves both into the eliminations and the saves that are part of the match. This is going to be an intriguing experiment.

Putting women in a cage, check. Putting women in Hell In A Cell, check. Putting women in Money in the Bank, check. Wrestling the first women's match in Saudi Arabia History, check. After next Sunday, we can check Royal Rumble off that list.
