Top 10 Podcasts of the Year
I'm someone who enjoys consuming multiple types of media at once. Whether I'm watching a TV show, playing a video game, watching a movie, or reading I normally always have a podcast going on in the background. I listen to way to many of them. Someitmes I have to binge listen to catch up much like people binge watching a series on Netflix. So which podcasts are the best? Probably not the one's I listen to. However today's list is the top 10 podcasts of the year. I had another sports article that I was going to write here but I moved it to next week to try and separate some of my year ending lists a little so it's not top 10 this and top 10 that for next week from Tuesday-Saturday.
10) My Brother My Brother & Me- This was the first comedy podcast I ever sampled. For a long time it was my favorite non sports, non gaming podcast. I even saw their life show CandleNights in 2014 in their hometown of Huntington, WV. Love the McElroy brother's.
9) The Comedy Button- This was the first podcast to truly earn my patreon. I had listened to many podcasts that all the hosts were on. Howvever I never listened to them all together. My mistake. They definitely deserve a spot here. Brian Altano, Max Scoville, Scott Bromley, & Ryan Scott are an excellent comedy troupe who may get a little nuts and a little crude at times but it is worth it in the end.
8) Colin's Last Stand: Fireside Chats- I had been getting Patreon updates for months. I actually just binge listened to every podcast Colin Moriarty has did last week on this channel. He goes into games, movies, tv, politics, and really any subject you can think about. He interviews friends, family, and even complete strangers to him that he finds fascinating. He's had an excellent year spinning off of Kinda Funny earlier in the year.
7) Kinda Funny Gamescast- The ever evolving Kinda Funny Gamescast. Tim Getty's hosts with Greg Miller and occasionally some big names in the gaming industry pop by. The original podcast was essentially a copy of the GameOverGreggy show. What it has evolved to now is something that isn't so much more topical as it is a more conversational podcast.
6)The GameOverGreggy Show- Greg Miller hosts this podcast with The Pure One Tim Getty's, The Producer/Seducer, Nick Scarpino, & The Hispanic Heartthrob Andy Cortez. Sometimes they bring in a 5th person as a special guest or sometimes Andy is just too busy editing Party Mode to participate so they just add the guest to his spot.(or another vacationing member.) This is a comedy podcast that can also get quite serious at times depending on the subjects. Not as much since Colin Moriarty left but again it becomes a different type of show.
5) Binge Mode- They picked the right show to hook me on. Mallory Rubin & Jason Concepcion did an episode by episode breakdown of Game of Thrones before the S7 release earlier this year. Then they came back weekly to do the same thing and continue breaking down Game of Thrones. They recently came back with more weekly non Game of Thrones content. I'm hoping they go crazy and find another movie series or show that is worth binging for another Mass content drop.
4) Gamescoop- Hosted by Daemon Hatfield usually with Justin Davis(SCOOP), Sam Clayborne(Scoop), and a 4th host usually at Random(Brap Brap?!). They normally tackle gaming's biggest topics of the week. They do a what are you playing segment which is excellent. Then they do video game 20 questions which is essentially 20 questions where your last guess has to be the correct game that a fan sent in. One of the best segments ever.
3) I Am Rapaport: Stereo Podcast- Michael Rapaport and G Moody have a great chemistry and you can tell they've known each other forever. They go in on sports, politics, movies, and other things. They occasionally do live shows and have guest appearances. This podcast could have been higher on the list had they been more consistent down the stretch. That said being #3 isn't a bad thing on a list like this.
2) The Bill Simmons Podcast- Hosted by Bill Simmons and a continuation of his ESPN Podcast, The BS Report. He already has excellent sports content but this year Bill stepped up his non sports content on the podcast. I listened to interviews with actors and such that I previously had no interest in outside of their movies and a few of them made me care more about the person doing the acting than the person they are portraying in the piece. Bill seems to have great chemistry with most of the people he interviews and he isn't afraid to fan boy out if need be.
1) What's Good Games: A Video Game Podcast- Hosted by Andrea Renee Drake, featuring Alexa Ray Corriea, Brittney Brombacher, & Kristine Steimer. Andrea Renee is an accomplished host. Alexa Ray cut her bones writing about video games and literally writing the book on Kingdom Hearts. Brittney Brombacher is a self made person in the gaming industry starting on the IGN blogs. Kristine Steimer has literally worked everywhere in the gaming industry as a writer, game designer, PR, editor, and host. The four of them put together an interesting group of girls with different backgrounds and different likes in games to put out the best podcast of the year. This is the first year of the podcast and I can say that this is a podcast I never had to skip an episode on. Yeah there are some others that fit that bill but they didn't push the quality of content or debate that this podcast had. I don't know how many times I've heard one of the girls say I guess we agree to disagree. Or get defensive of their point. This to me is what a podcast should be. Great conversation. Great debate. Occasionally some shenanigans.
So that's my top 10 podcast list of the year. Here is a quick recap incase you don't want to read the reasoning why.
