The PUBG Phenomenon.
Tetris(1984). Minecraft(2011). Grand Theft Auto V(2013). Wii Sports(2006). Super Mario Bros(1985). Mario Kart Wii(2008). Wii Sports Resort(2009). Pokemon Red/Green/Blue(1996). New Super Marios Bros[3DS](2006). New Super Mario Bros Wii(2009). The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim(2011). Diablo III(2012). Duck Hunt(1984). Wii Play(2006). Grand Theft Auto San Andreas(2004). What do all these games have in common? They clearly aren't the same type of video games. . They all aren't from the same publishers or even on the same platforms. Some are exclsive to one console or platform. However these are the only titles that have sold more than Player Unknown's Battlegrounds(PUBG). I put the year of release beside the game so you know when they came out. The interesting thing about PUBG is that it came out March 23rd of this year and is already the 16th best selling game of all time in one year. Let's put that in perspective.

PUBG has now sold 26M just on steam. So no console helped with those numbers. Yet PC is the biggest platform. It did come to console last week to a roaring success. Add in another 1M in 48 hours on Xbox One. That would put it at over 27M for one single game release in one year. The interesting thing is that from March 23-December 19 the game was in early access on Steam/PC. That means people were paying 29.99 for an incomplete game. The 1.0 version, which usually means launch in the PC world released on December 20th, 2017. So 27M copies of a game that has essentially been out a day. That is amazing. The Xbox One version is still in Xbox’s version of early access called Game Preview. CNET just updated saying there are 30M in sales which would push it from 16 into a tie for 11 with Skyrim & Diablo III. That again is amazing. Maybe I will do a GTA V V Minecraft V PUBG In the future of the sales continue to rise.

So what is PUBG? Ever read the book Battle Royale? Played H1Z1? Watched the Hunger Games?Maybe even saw The Condemned? It is what it sounds like. You drop 100 people on an island and only one person wins. Or you can play a duo mode and have 50 teams drop on an island and one team wins. Or you can do a squad of 4 with 25 teams dropping in but again only one team winning. So how does the game force 100 players who jump out of a plane at different times together? It has an electric field like in the Hunger Games pushing you to a certain point in the map. Sometimes there are buildings, sometimes there is water, sometimes you are just out in the open dodging bullets on one side and vehicles on the other side. I can personally attest that it is the most adrenaline pumping experience I've had out of a piece of media in a long time. It is one of the most fun games I've played. Be warned there is a fair amount of jank and if you play on Xbox One it is nowhere near the final version of the game. It is rough around the edges. After looking at all the other Games out there is no other game that gets me as excited, frantic, and raises my blood pressure like PUBG. Another PUBG tip is to aim. Unlike other shooters polshed for console like Battlefield, Battlefront, Call of Duty, Titanfall, Destiny 2, there is no auto aim. If you miss, you miss. You have to understand bullet drop. Statistics in the above C-NET article point out that people need to learn to shoot. There isnt what people in game design call hit boxes where you can miss a shot but the game still credits you with a hit because you were "close enough" for the games software. There currently isn't an update on when the next big Xbox One patch is.This game replaced Destiny 2 as my shooter of choice this year after Destiny 2 struggled to get content out.
How does the media perceive it? It depends on who you read. Polygon gave it a 10.0. IGN gave the Xbox One version a 5.0. Using the aggregate site Metacritic it has an overall score of 93 from and a 5.0 from people on the internet. No telling how many of those people actually played the PC version. The Xbox One page on Metacritic had 0 reviews posted so I didn't bother dragging that ove here. Still 93 from critics is a good nuumber for a game that has just hit around 33 hours of an official release.

So what's next for PUBG? They have a second map they are testing on the PC now. It is of the desert variety. We assume at some point in 2018 it will migrate over to the Xbox One as will the full 1.0 release. This is definitely content we would want as an Xbox One player. Stability which ranges from match to match would also be a +. But again I know that I'm playing an inferior version of the game on Xbox One at the moment. To see them talk about more improving the PC version and what is on the horizon keeps me excited that I will be comin gback to PUBG for years to come. How can you get PUBG?
If you are interested in purchasing PUBG you have 3 ways you can do so.
1) Pay 29.99 on Steam
2) Pay 29.99 on Xbox One
3) Buy an Xbox One X and get it for free through Dec 31.
What are your PUBG thoughts? Let me know in the comments below! The PUBG Phenomenon is taking the nation by storm. Will it continue to be a top seller like Minecraft & GTAV or will it eventually tail off? Also if you want to play PUBG feel free to add me on Xbox Live.
