2017 Top 10 Games of the Year

Hello all! I’m a little late with this column because I was doing some research for this column by getting an impression on Shadow of War. It didn’t quite make the list as one of my top 10 games of 2017. If you want comment below, tweet or Facebook with your opinion opinion on my list. Or maybe you want to let me know what your to 10 list is. Anyway here are my 10 best games in order from 10-1 this year. In parenthesis you’ll see what platform I played the game on. I will give a small blurb on what I liked about the game.

2017
10. Super Mario Odyssey(Switch)- The Switch came out with two heavy hitters this year. Mario was the game that resonated with me. It is the best Mario Game since Mario 64 and my 4th all time favorite Mario game. The mechanics are superb. The surprises are fun. It made me go back to being a kid again playing Super Mario World.

9. Assassins Creed: Origins(XboxOne) Most people said they needed to take a year off of Assassins Creed last year. I disagree I think we were missing a title like Assassins Creed last year. This was an excellent release and definitely joins Brotherhood, Rogue, Black Flag, & Syndicate as a top 5 Assassins Creed game. Definitely the best open world traversal this year.(sorry Zelda, nothing to combat the rain when you are almost atop a mountain and then you slide all the way down isn't fun. Especially when that's the direction I need to go.) The normal bugs that they correct within weeks seemed really crisp this year.

8. Horizon: Zero Dawn(PS4)- The Sony exclusive was a big switch from Killzone and is definitely the best new IP of the year. Horizon has one of the best interwoven stories in an open world on current generation consoles. This will take you on highs and lows as you feel Alloy's plight.

7. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard(PS4)- So including the American name, a numeral, & then the Japanese game sounds like Disaster right? The last two RE’s were more action shooters. RE7 takes you back to the horror element especially in the first part of the game. The 2nd half has more action but still provides the premise of what the RE series was pre RE5. I hate horror games but RE typically gets me to play their games but giving me an element of control.

6. Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds(XboxOne)- It probably would have been higher had I played more games. While the game is still in preview mode it is the best multiplayer experience on current generation consoles. The jank makes for fun gameplay. You can also have fun in solo mode going up against 99 other opponents. Again this is the most fun game of the year. Forget the bugs and getting kicked out of games. You get stories from this game that you will be telling your friends for years to come.

5. Pyre(PS4)- After enjoying Bastion and not really liking Transistor I was afraid of this SuperGiant game. I was wrong to be afraid. The story telling, music, art style, and probably the best cast of characters mixed with what is best described as the American gladiators game where you take a soccer ball and try to put it in a basket. I’m unsure how to explain it. Just play it. You’ll be hooked with excellent gameplay.

4. Persona 5(PS4)- The 2nd best Persona next to P4G. This is definitely the 2nd best cast of characters and the 2nd best JRPG of the year. It takes you through a range of emotions with plot twists. Like most Japanese games this was super crisp as far as how it controlled. They added new elements to keep Persona fresh. If you have 100 hours to spare, feel free to jump in.

3. Nier: Automata(PS4)-  The best JRPG of the year. The best music of the year. Play through the game 3 times for 3 different endings at around 10 hours a piece. Around a 30 hour investment. It’s worth it. Do not go back and play the original Nier or Drakenguard. Those aren’t worth it. Square Enix hit it big with this low budget game.

2. Mass Effect: Andromeda- This is the first Mass Effect to deliver on the original promise that we got with Mass effect 1. It’s not the best entry in the series and many people encountered some bugs and then joined outrage culture. I didn’t encounter that. I also don’t play the game to see my characters bad facial expressions. What I did enjoy was crisp controls, and the best vehicle in a Mass Effect game. I enjoyed the exploration and for the most part not having to live up to Commander Shepard and his military hero background.

1. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus(XboxOne)-  This game was a series of big moments. The music for the high notes pumps you up. The music for the low notes gets you deep in your feelings. This is a shooter you can power through. They did away with the terrible stealth mechanics that plagued the first XboxOne release. I honestly didn’t expect this game to hit the top 10 but they set up and delivered mission after mission. No note was wasted.

That’s my top 10. For a quick recap
